Ellen Przybyla–a writer, researcher and environmental designer–founded Subtilis Design in 2008 in New York City. In 2011, she incorporated Subtilis and took the business to Barcelona, Spain. Currently, Subtilis maintains a studio in Tenerife, Canary Islands.
Subtilis Design, Inc. has been a registered corporation since 2011.

Who we are.
Founded in New York City and currently based in Tenerife, Subtilis is a boutique firm with the flexibility to help clients realize ambitious goals. We work with architects, scientists, game developers, sound designers, writers and educators to envision projects in imaginative ways. Through its collaborative approach, Subtilis is able to build its team according to a project's scope and a client's needs.
Elle Przybyla, Founder and Principal
Elle is a writer, researcher and spatial designer. She brings more than a decade of experience in interactive product and exhibition development to Subtilis.
Elle began her career as a media producer at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, where she collaborated closely with the molecular biology lab and astrophysics department to produce award-winning print and technology products related to exhibitions. Intrigued by the challenges of disseminating cutting-edge scientific information in a spatial context, Elle went on to pursue a Master of Architecture at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to formalize her interest in environmental design and digital production & fabrication.
Since founding Subtilis, she has consulted as a design researcher, content and design strategist and producer for global media companies and museums in the U.S. and Spain.
Interested in all manner of ecosystems, she holds a bachelor's degree in environmental biology from Columbia University.
Juan Matos Capote, Project Consultant
Juan is a sound & visual artist and educator. As a part of the Subtilis team, Juan oversees sound design and multimedia production for both digital products and installations.
Prior to Subtilis, Juan founded and managed Circuit Torçat, an independent experimental art space in Barcelona. As director, he taught workshops and curated shows focused on sound art. Juan has also led workshops at various institutions, including STEIM (Amsterdam), CCCB (Barcelona), and TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes. He currently teaches art and technical drawing to young students in Tenerife.
A recipient of a Fulbright scholarship, Juan received a Master of Fine Arts Degree (MFA) from Pratt Institute, New York. He holds a Master of Education and a Bachelors of Fine Arts from Universidad de La Laguna, Spain and studied at HISK, Belgium. He is currently pursuing his doctorate in sound art from the Department of Fine Arts in Cuenca, Universidad de Castilla–La Mancha, Spain.
His visual works have been exhibited in Europe, North America, Oceania and Africa.
